Chemex coffee makers have been brewing a superior cup of Joe since 1941

Chemex History:

The Chemex coffee maker was invented in 1941 by a chemist named Dr. Schlumbohm. He set out to simplify the process of brewing the perfect cup of coffee, but also wanted to make sure the brewing vessel would be a thing of beauty. Being a chemist, he understood the science behind the extraction of flavor and caffeine from coffee beans.

Style & Substance:

The hourglass shape of the Chemex carafe was inspired by Bauhaus design. Schlumbohm used non-porous borosilicate laboratory glass to make sure the brewing vessel would never alter the flavor of the coffee brewed within. To protect your hands, he added wooden collar held together with a rawhide tie. He also invented a double bonded paper filter to fit perfectly inside the carafe while offering a perfect extraction every time.

The Chemex perfectly combines elegant simplicity in form and scientific genius in function. In 1943, the Museum of Modern Art displayed the Chemex as one of the best-designed products of the year. These beautiful carafes have been kept in the permanent collections of some of the most prestigious museums in the world ever since.

A Damn Fine Cuppa:

Accept no substitutes! The Chemex coffee maker combines simple functionality and beautiful design better than any coffee brewing system on the market. Widely considered to be one of the best ways to brew the perfect cup of coffee; the Chemex has been the choice of coffee lovers globally for over 75 years and counting.

Like all good things, full flavor takes a little time, but brewing rich flavorful coffee is a simple process.

STEP 1: GET INTO THE GRIND

Select your favorite whole bean coffee you want to enjoy and grind it to medium coarse ground.

STEP 2: FILTER UP

Open a Chemex paper filter into a cone shape so that one side of the cone has three layers, and place it into the top of the carafe. The thick (three-layer) portion should cover the pouring spout.

STEP 3: THE SCOOP

Put one rounded tablespoon of ground coffee into the filter for every 5 oz. of coffee you want to brew. Feel free to use more if you prefer a stronger coffee.

STEP 4: LET IT BLOOM

Bring water a boil and remove it from the heat to let it cool just slightly. boiling vigorously. The Perfect brewing temperature is about 200°F.
Pour a small amount of water over the coffee grounds to wet them, and wait for about 30 seconds for them to “bloom”, releasing the most desirable coffee elements from the grounds.

STEP 5: BREW

After the grounds bloom, slowly pour hot water over the grounds while keeping the water level well below the top of the carafe.

Continue slowly pouring the remaining water over the grounds, using a circular or back-and-forth motion as you pour to ensure an even soaking of the grounds.

STEP 6: TOSS THE FILTER

Once the coffee is brewed, lift the filter and grounds out of the brewer and discard.

STEP 7: ENJOY THE PERFECT CUP

Pour your freshly made coffee into your favorite mug and enjoy!
